The Vice-Provost of West Lothian welcomes Haldanes to the town
Haldanes has taken over the former Somerfield outlet on East Main Street, Broxburn, guaranteeing the jobs of all 46 staff, three weeks after opening for business the first of its planned nationwide chain in Prestonpans, East Lothian, which was followed by another two – in Carluke, Lanarkshire, and last week, in Tranent, just outside Edinburgh.
The Vice-Provost of West Lothian Councillor Jim Dickson was at the store opening to welcome Haldanes to the town where staff had had an anxious nine-month wait for news of the future of their jobs.
Una Lawson, who has worked at the store for 11 years, cut the ribbon, watched by Mr Harris and Haldanes regional business development director Katie Hainey.

The first Haldanes Store is open!
The first Haldanes store opened yesterday the 18th November at Prestonpans. The Haldanes team backed up by some exceptionally dedicated and skilled contractors worked tirelessly from the handover only four days previously to ensure the store opened timeously at 10am yesterday. The store was
completely emptied on Saturday afternoon and in those four days it was painted, deep cleaned, new equipment added, completely rebranded and then restocked and merchandised from nothing to full and opening went ahead on time with a long queue of excited customers. The store was opened by Linda Fraser and Mary Moohan two members of staff who have worked at this store for a total of 50 years between them and whose vast experience Haldanes is looking forward to tapping into. They were joined by Arthur Harris, Chairman and Keith Martin, Store Manager (see image on right). To add a touch of sentimentality to the opening, the cutting of the ribbon was undertaken using some ornate scissors that were originally used to cut the ribbon for the launching of a Haldanes trawler back in 1904 by Arthur Harris’ Great Aunt, Miss Kathleen Haldane.
The next three stores, Carluke, Tranent and Broxburn will open on 25th November, 1st December and 8th December respectively.
